Once you have passed both parts of the theory test and shown that you have the aptitude and ability to undertake the final part of the driving test, you will be ready to apply for the practical test.

In order to achieve a successful first time pass, it is important that you have had sufficient tuition and practice. This should ensure you are well prepared and be more than capable of displaying the standard expected by your examiner.

The test lasts approximately 40 minutes during which your examiner will be looking for an overall safe standard of driving. You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass the test (16 or more results in failure). However, if you commit one serious or dangerous fault you will fail the test.

• your eyesight will be checked to ensure you can read a number plate from 20½ metres (67 feet), or 20 metres (66 feet) if fitted to a car registered after 2001
• you will be asked two questions on the mechanical aspects of your car, one of which will involve you performing a task whilst driving, for example, demisting the car’s windscreen
• you will undertake an assessment of your driving capabilities

The driving part of the test usually lasts about 30-35 minutes on different types of local roads. During this part of the test you will be asked to perform one manoeuvre from the following options. In addition you may be asked to perform a controlled stop as if in an emergency.

• Pulling up on the right hand side of the road, reversing for 2 car lengths, then moving away and rejoining traffic
• Parking in a bay by either driving in and then reversing out, or reversing in and driving out
• Reverse parking the car behind a parked vehicle

The Practical Driving Test

Most candidates will be asked to drive independently for twenty minutes by following sat nav directions, although one in five tests will follow a route using traffic signs, further details can be found here.
